Today, Robert Freegard lives as a free man after being released from prison in 2009. His original two life sentences for kidnap by fraud were revoked by the Court of Appeal which ruled Freegard's victims had not been physically held against their will.

The character of Alice Archer, played by Arterton is not a real person, but she is heavily inspired by the real woman who brought Freegard to justice.

Filming took place at Dover Castle and Dover Lighthouse. That July, Sarah Goldberg, Jimmy Akingbola, Freya Mavor, Rob Malone, Philip Wright, Michael Fenton Stevens and Charlotte Avery were added to the cast.

Although his story may be lesser known than other famous con artists, Freegard seems to have popped into the zeitgeist this year. He is also the subject of Netflix's recent documentary series The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman, which is worth a watch after you finish Rogue Agent.

There is brief close-up sight of the tendons being severed. Other strong violence includes bloody shootings and stabbings, as well as killings by strangulation and suffocation. There is frequent strong language ('f**k'), much of it used in an aggressive manner. There is a scene in which a couple have sex.

The film is based on Robert Hendy-Freegard, who masqueraded as an MI5 agent, conning several people into giving him their life savings and fooling them into going underground for fear of assassination by the IRA.

The character of Alice Archer, played by Arterton is not a real person, but she is heavily inspired by the real woman who brought Freegard to justice.

Freegard was eventually brought to justice when Scotland Yard, along with the FBI, apprehended him at Heathrow Airport in London. He was with his latest victim at the time. Freegard was able to psychologically manipulate… a psychologist.
